Missing the window costs three months.

HARNO charges nothing to sit the B2 exam. What costs you is the calendar. Level exams run at least four times a year, registration closes on the first day of the month before the exam, and results take up to 40 days. Sit it unprepared and the next realistic date is a quarter away.
  • 37.13%
passed B2 in 2025: 808 of 2,176 candidates. Almost two in three fail. Source: HARNO.
  • 60 / 100
points to pass. A zero in any single part still fails you.
  • 4x a year
sittings, one per quarter. Registration closes on the 1st of the previous month.

What the B2 exam asks you to do

Legal requirements

Who needs a B2 certificate

B2 is not required by law. People take it for work, for university, and because employers ask for it.
Work that asks for more
B2 is the level employers name when the job involves writing, negotiation or talking to the public.
University
Admission and academic work in Estonian usually start at B2.
Citizenship and long-term residence
B1 is the legal minimum, and B2 is accepted for both. You do not need it — you may want it.
B1 is the legal minimum for Estonian citizenship and for the long-term resident's permit; B2 and C1 are accepted as well. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your own situation with HARNO or the Police and Border Guard Board.
Why preparation matters

Strong Estonian can still fail the B2 exam

  • 63%
fail the B2 exam. Only 37 of every 100 candidates pass it.
  • 70%
    fail C1, the level above.
  • 40%
fail B1, the level citizenship requires.
Language proficiency is not the same as exam success. The points go missing in four predictable places.
Task types you have never practised. A formal letter and an argumentative text under the clock. Listening moves to real radio. A language course teaches the language, not the exam's tasks.
  • The clock
Two written tasks in 80 minutes, not 35. Four reading tasks in 70. Slow writing is what fails B2 candidates, not grammar.
  • A zero in one part ends it.
You pass with 60 out of 100, but only if all four parts score. Speaking is the shortest part and the one most candidates skip in preparation.
  • The day itself
Speaking is a separate appointment, with an examiner and a topic you draw from a card. Stress costs marks you would have earned at home.

That part you can train.
